Folio
Effective 25 September 2026 · replaces the version of 15 September 2026
These terms govern your use of Folio. By using the app you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
The three that matter most. Folio writes a new PDF when you export; it never changes the file you opened, so keep that original until you have checked the export. A signature placed in Folio is a picture, not a certified digital signature — whether it is legally sufficient depends on the law and the parties, not on the app. And a password you set on an exported file cannot be recovered by us or by the app: if you lose it, that file is lost.
Folio is published by Apex Root Solutions LLC, a limited liability company organised under the laws of the State of Delaware, with its registered office in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, and its principal place of business in Cedar Hill, Dallas County, Texas. "We" and "us" mean that company; "you" means the person using the app.
You must be old enough to form a binding contract where you live, and at least 13. If you are under the age of majority, you may use the app only with the involvement of a parent or guardian who agrees to these terms.
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Folio on Apple or Android devices you own or control and in your web browser, for your own purposes. You may not copy, sell, rent, sub-licence or redistribute the app, reverse engineer it except to the extent that restriction is unenforceable where you live, or use it to build a competing product. The fonts bundled with the app are licensed under the SIL Open Font Licence and remain under that licence.
Folio renders and edits PDF documents on your device and exports a new PDF. PDF is a large and irregular format; the app validates a file before opening it, warns you about things it cannot reproduce faithfully, and verifies that an export reopens before reporting success. Even so, we cannot promise that every document will render, edit or export identically to another application, that form fields, fonts or annotations from every producer will survive, or that the output will meet a particular standard such as PDF/A. Check an exported file before you rely on it.
Four features deserve their own statement, because what they can and cannot do is easy to assume wrongly.
Editing existing text rewrites the page's own text using the font already embedded in the document. A font that does not contain a character you typed is reported rather than silently replaced, and some text cannot be edited at all. Reflowing a document, as a word processor does, is not something Folio attempts.
Redaction deletes content from the file rather than covering it: the marked text is removed from the page's content stream, and an image or form that overlaps the marked area is removed entirely. Before you rely on it for a document you are handing to someone else, check the exported file yourself. Redaction acts on the page content you marked; it does not search the document for the same information elsewhere, and it does not rewrite metadata, attachments or an earlier version of the file that another tool may have left inside it. A shape you draw over text is not redaction, and the app says so.
Recognising text on a scan produces a best-effort transcription and adds it as an invisible layer so the page can be searched and copied. Recognition makes mistakes, particularly with handwriting, poor scans, tables and unusual type. The recognised text is not evidence of what the page says; the image is. Do not rely on it where accuracy matters without checking it.
Converting to Word or Excel produces a new document, not a copy of the original. Text, its styling and its reading order carry over and tables become real tables, but page layout, images, drawings, annotations, form fields and exact positioning do not. Export a PDF when the document has to look as it does now.
You own the documents you open and the files you export. You are responsible for having the right to edit and distribute them. The app does not alter the file you opened; an export is a new file that you choose where to save. The optional draft-recovery feature keeps a working copy on your device only, and only when you have turned it on. We have no access to any of it.
Folio opens a protected PDF when you supply a password that the file itself accepts, and can put a password on a file you export. Three things follow from that, and you accept them by using the feature.
We cannot recover a password. Not one you set on an export, and not one on a file you have been given. The app authenticates a password against the file; it does not break, guess or bypass protection, and we cannot do so on your behalf. A protected file whose password is lost is, for our purposes, unrecoverable.
Permissions are a request, not a lock. When you allow or disallow printing, copying or editing on an exported file, that setting is written into the file as the PDF format defines it. Most readers honour it. Nothing in the format compels them to, and a determined tool need not. Do not treat those settings as security.
Opening a protected file decrypts your working copy. Folio does not strip protection from a file you export — an export without a password is something you choose, and the app warns you when the original was protected — but while you are working, the copy in the app is decrypted, and a saved draft of it is decrypted too. The Privacy Policy explains where that draft lives and how to delete it.
You are responsible for having the right to open a protected document you supply a password for.
The signature tool places an image on the page. It does not apply a cryptographic digital signature, does not verify identity and does not create a certified document. Whether an image signature is valid for a given purpose is a question of law and of the agreement between the parties. Do not use Folio where a certified digital signature is required.
You may not use the app to forge, alter or misrepresent a document with intent to deceive, to infringe anyone's rights, or in breach of any law. You may not use it to open, decrypt or remove protection from a document you have no right to open, whatever password you have.
Folio is currently free of charge and contains no purchases. If we introduce paid features we will say so in the app and update these terms before any charge applies.
We may change, suspend or discontinue the app or any feature at any time. Because the app works entirely on your device, a version you have installed keeps working as it is regardless of what we do afterwards, subject to the platform it runs on. We may update these terms; the date at the top says when. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept it.
You may stop at any time by deleting the app or clearing the site's data in your browser. We may end your licence if you materially breach these terms. Sections 4, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 and 15 survive the end of this agreement.
The app is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, that any document will render or export correctly, or that it will meet your requirements. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, a corrupted or unreadable document, or a document that was not accepted where you submitted it, arising out of or relating to the app, whether in contract, tort or otherwise, even if we have been advised of the possibility.
Our total liability for all claims relating to the app is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for it in the twelve months before the claim, or twenty-five United States dollars.
Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
You will indemnify and hold us harmless from claims, losses and reasonable legal costs arising out of your misuse of the app, your breach of these terms, or your infringement of anyone's rights — including in documents you edited with it.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You and we submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Dallas County, Texas. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory laws of the country where you live, or of the right to bring proceedings there where such a right cannot be waived.
If you installed the app from Google Play, this agreement is between you and us, not with Google; Google is not responsible for the app or its content and has no obligation to provide support for it. Google's own terms for Google Play also apply to your use of the store.
If you installed the app from the App Store: this agreement is between you and us, not with Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for the app. If the app fails to conform to any warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claim relating to the app, including product liability, a failure to conform to a legal requirement, or a claim under consumer-protection or privacy law. Apple is not responsible for investigating, defending or resolving any third-party claim that the app infringes intellectual property rights. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a United States embargo or designated as terrorist-supporting, and that you are not on any United States list of prohibited or restricted parties.
These terms, with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between us about the app. If a provision is unenforceable, the rest stays in force. Our not enforcing a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign this agreement; we may assign it to a successor in connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
